Men’s Journal contacted me to photograph an upcoming story for the magazine on longboarding. I met up with writer Grant Stoddard and the group from Land Yachtz Longboards, who are also Vancouver based, and we headed into the upscale British Properties in West Vancouver to spend the chilly afternoon sessioning several steep winding hills.
My assignment was to ‘capture the speed and thrill of the sport’. To get that sense of motion in the images, I worked with slower shutter speeds that added blur, but still kept the subject sharp. Most of the shoot was done with me hanging out of the back of the Yand Yachtz van, photographing the riders as they raced down the hill towards me. We had a few close calls with oncoming traffic, but the shoot was a blast and, most importantly, we got the shots.
